What is PPC?
First, let’s get clear on what pay per click advertising is. It’s basically paying to get
near the top of the search engines. Technically it’s advertising, because you’re
writing a small ad, but I always think of it as writing a listing to go on the search
engines, and we’re paying to be near or at the top of the listing that people see,
when they do searches for phrases related to your business.
But here’s where it gets interesting, although it’s usually described as ‘paying to be at
the top of the search engines', you don’t actually pay for being on the search
engines. Being there doesn’t cost you anything. You only pay when someone clicks
on your ad and goes to your website. Hence the phrase ‘pay per click.’
Local Advertising
Even if you’re a small local business, you should test pay per click. Here’s why:
One of the revolutions created by PPC is in local search. The technology allows you
to choose the geographical areas where your ad appears. So you can specify that
you only want your ad to appear for Google users living within a 20 mile radius of
Brighton or Sevenoaks for example.
